Skylanders: Less fruit, more killing

Spoiler alert! I think I can sum up Skylanders Cloud Patrol as a fruit ninja knock-off with more violence and more accessories at a third the price. If you love fruit ninja, you will probably love Skylanders Cloud Patrol. But you will probably love Fruit Ninja more. Three stars.

Fruit Ninja earned its reputation as a slice and dice game where you could splatter fruit juice all over the screen. You could earn different swords and had to avoid bombs. The graphics were great, slightly less than spectacular, and you really had to be quick with your sword. It was an iPad Game of the Week and a best selling app.

Skylanders Cloud Patrol reminds me very much of Fruit Ninja. You blast trolls and scatter them across the screen, earn different weapons and skylanders. The graphics are okay, the colors garish and you have to be quick on the draw. It’s also much cheaper at $1. It was also this week’s iPad Game of the Week, but I’m not sure it will be a best seller.

The main task of Skylanders Cloud Patrol is to shoot trolls and avoid bombs. As you complete levels, the trolls multiply and their weapons fire more quickly.

The idea of the game is to shoot trolls to build up an army of skylanders who, in turn, kill trolls better. You can tap on trolls to shoot them, or slide your finger in a slashing motion to kill them in one fell swoop. As with Fruit Ninjas, you have to avoid bombs or your game is over. Unlike Fruit Ninjas, the trolls shoot back. The overall approach is the same, quick reflexes and the ability to pull up short.

Skylanders Cloud Patrol combines a level up and instant death approach. The levels are brief. If you kill all the trolls before they kill you or you hit a bomb, you’re onto the next level. If you accidentally hit a bomb, it’s game over. The good news is there’s no clock; the bad news is that you will probably die faster.

You can spend gems to buy potions and magic items to boost your powers. For instance, for five gems you can buy a healing potion that allows you to continue. Unfortunately, you also have to earn the coins to buy each dose and the doses get more expensive the further you get. If you don’t earn gems and cash quickly enough, you can always buy more gems or coins through in-app purchases.

You can unlock magical powers and new Skylander heroes with gems and coins. You can earn them, but you will probably end up buying them with in-app purchases.

The graphics are created in a 3D program and have the rough polygon look of low resolution shading. The lower polygon count is necessary to speed up redraw and game play on iOS devices, but I can’t see it rating on anyone’s top game list. This is partly a matter of taste, but I do feel that graphics play a huge role in how much I enjoy game play.

Playing Skylanders Cloud Patrol requires no brain power, just quick reflexes. It’s not a game for players who like to strategize. But will help you piss away your free time when you’re bored with slicing fruit.

Jenny Manytoes rates Skylanders Cloud Patrol

Jenny Manytoes would take a nap next to Skylanders Cloud Patrol. It’s mindless fun for a dollar, but you might have more fun with other games.

The Jenny Manytoes Rating System

Jenny Manytoes, our polydactyl cat
  • When Jenny makes biscuits on a product she thinks she’s in heaven.
  • When Jenny purrs over a product she’s very happy.
  • When Jenny naps next to a product it’s okay with her.
  • When Jenny bunches her tail she can live with a product, but she has higher expectations.
  • When Jenny leaves it in the litter box….I don’t think I need to explain this one.
