Christmas countdown apps run wide race

Spoiler alert! There are far too many Christmas countdown apps to review individually so I had to take a sample, focusing on apps in the free to $1 price range. Of the lot I would have to recommend Sleeps to Christmas Premium, but I’m sure there are others that will make you happy. And some, like Christmas Countdown, that probably won’t.

I couldn’t believe how many Christmas countdown apps are already available on the App Store and we haven’t even celebrated Thanksgiving yet. Many are from last year and still hanging around, others are brand new for 2011. They are so much better and far more interactive than the countdown app I used as a kid.It was called a calendar. And I thought if I marked off a new day every day and pointed it out to my parents, they would break down and start giving me presents early just to shut me up. It worked just one Christmas, when my mother broke down and gave my sister and me one present a day for the week prior to Christmas. Then I shot myself in the foot by pressing for two presents a day.Do I really need to explain myself further? Now my nephews Stephen and Nathan pester Aimee and her husband Gary for daily presents leading up to Christmas. I think it’s either genetic or Baptist. My sisters and I were raised Baptist Preacher’s Kids (BPK), and now that I know a little more about American history, I find it amusing how important Christmas had become to Baptist theology since it was a Catholic holiday. That’s right, our Puritan ancestors, the Christians who supposedly founded America,1 thought Christians should be at work on December 25, and were pissed off when their Catholic employees wanted to take the day from work. If Puritans acknowledged Christ on Christmas, it was to pray. This tells me that the best way to stop the long tradition of wheedling and cajoling for early Christmas presents is to stop this tradition of Christmas countdowns, or to stop giving presents and returning to prayer and fasting.Like that would ever happen. I’m sure the one thing Democrats, Republicans and Christian businessmen agree on would be that Christmas is too big a cash cow to go back to the days of prayer and fasting. I can see the campaign slogans now, “More presents, less prayer.”But we could probably use fewer days until Christmas. Then we probably would have fewer Christmas countdown apps to choose from.Let’s start with the clear loser. Christmas Countdown, which would have been fine were it free, but they raised the price to a dollar. Basically the app displays a picture of Santa holding a sign counting down the days to Christmas with animated snow falling. Jingle Bells plays in the background.

Christmas Countdown may give new meaning to the old phrase “WYSIWYG.” Except for the music, which this blog can’t play, what you see below is what you get.

That’s pretty much all there is to Christmas Countdown. In fact, that’s pretty much all there is to any of these apps, just with fewer bells and whistles. The developers, possibly anticipating this review, have promised to add more backgrounds and different music, but the additions will be too late to make this review. If the developers do deliver, however, Christmas Countdown will probably be pretty much like Sleeps to Christmas and the 2011 sequel Sleeps to Christmas 2. The original comes in a free with ads version and a premium version with no ads. When I wrote this review the sequel was only available in the free with ads version, although the developers are certain to release a premium version.Sleeps to Christmas offers four different countdown characters—Santa, a snow man, an elf and a gingerbread man. You can choose one of several tunes to play in the background and email the countdown to friends. You can even have the countdown display in days, hours, minutes or seconds.

Sleeps to Christmas allows you to select from four different Christmas characters and a choice of half-a-dozen Christmas melodies.

Sleeps to Christmas 2 is almost exactly the same except with different artwork and animated Christmas characters. The gingerbread man gets angry when his arms are nibbled, the elf juggles a toy, and the snowman pulls his nose off. You can no longer email your countdown, probably because the animation will be hard to capture.

Different artwork and animated characters are the only features that really distinguish Sleeps to Christmas 2 from its predecessor.

I could write about more, but, so far as I can tell this summary pretty much accounts for just about every countdown app out there. If you’re really, really into Christmas countdowns you might want to drop a dollar on one, but I think you will find more entertaining types of Christmas apps featuring music and games. To me, opening these countdown apps was a little like getting socks for Christmas.

Jenny Manytoes rates Christmas Countdown apps

Jenny Manytoes would take a nap next to Sleeps to Christmas and the sequel, although if you really love all things Christmas you might rate it higher. Christmas Countdown reminds me more of that gift you find at the bargain counter and then, a week later, find something far better for about the same price.

1It also amazes me how much the Puritans have been woven into the tapestry of America’s founding mythology when Catholics were already here in the southern colonies as indentured servants. They did celebrate Christmas, but since they basically tilled the fields and harvested the crops for the Protestant “landed gentry'” they have been assigned no more an important role than today’s janitors and fast food workers. back

Jenny Manytoes, our polydactyl cat
  • When Jenny makes biscuits on a product she thinks she’s in heaven.
  • When Jenny purrs over a product she’s very happy.
  • When Jenny naps next to a product it’s okay with her.
  • When Jenny bunches her tail she can live with a product, but she has higher expectations.
  • When Jenny leaves it in the litter box….I don’t think I need to explain this one.
